Morning: Exploring Yufuin
Rather than rush to Beppu, this route allows for a relaxed morning in Yufuin, a compact onsen town known for its quieter charm. While Beppu may be more famous, Yufuin offers a more walkable and less commercial atmosphere, with boutique shops and small museums worth a look.
A suggested cultural stop is the COMICO Art Museum, offering a mix of architecture and contemporary art. For a more whimsical detour, the Retro Car Museum showcases vintage vehicles in a nostalgic, low-key setting.
Ride to Beppu Port
After lunch, the ride continues with a short but steady 8 km / 340 m climb from Yufuin to the ridge overlooking Beppu. On the way out, it's worth stopping by Kinrin Lake, though it may feel modest compared to the natural spots along earlier riding days.
From the top, it's an easy descent into Beppu, bypassing the city's main tourist areas and heading directly to the ferry terminal. The ferry to Shikoku runs several times daily and takes passengers and bicycles across the Bungo Channel to Yawatahama.
Evening: Arrival in Shikoku
Upon arriving in Yawatahama, riders can choose from a few simple accommodations. While some traditional inns are available, they may double as long-term housing for workers, especially in smaller port towns. Western-style business hotels are often more predictable in quality and location. Local hospitality tends to be flexible, and even last-minute changes can usually be handled smoothly.
