Riding the Coast of Wakasa: Takahama to Suigetsu Lake

Route Overview

This ride follows the coast of Fukui Prefecture, heading northeast from Takahama toward Suigetsu Lake. The general rule is simple: keep the sea on the left and the mountains on the right. While there is a dedicated cycling path along the beach for sections of the ride, it's not always well maintained - some stretches are covered in sand - so it's often better to stay on the smaller town roads nearby.

The overall distance is around 50 km with 550 m of climbing, mostly gentle. Thanks to a pair of tunnels, the highest point is only about 100 m above sea level. The final segment circles Suigetsu Lake on a quiet lakeside road and bike path.

Optional Stops

  • Miketsukuni Wakasa Obama Food Culture Museum
A compact but interesting museum about the region's fishing and mackerel traditions, especially the "Mackerel Road" trade route that once connected this coastline to Kyoto. There's also a restaurant onsite with soba, udon, curry, and ice cream.

  • Fukui Prefectural Seaside Nature Center
A small facility with local marine life and a popular "nibble fish" pool. Worth a short visit if time allows, especially if traveling with kids.

Notes on Accommodation

The Suigetsu Lake area has a number of lakeside ryokan, some of which cater to Japanese sightseeing groups. These often offer both indoor and outdoor hot spring baths and multi-course meals focused on local seafood.

Even higher-end places tend to be laid back and welcoming to independent travelers. Many serve regional specialties such as nabe, seasonal plum-based desserts, and even fugu (blowfish), which is famously risky but safe when prepared by licensed chefs.
