About This Route
This full-day ride begins in Nagasaki, ascends into Unzen National Park, and finishes in Kumamoto via a ferry from Shimabara. It combines busy urban roads, scenic detours, sustained climbing, and a rewarding downhill to the coast, followed by a smooth transfer across the bay.
The route is well-suited for strong intermediate or advanced riders looking to link lesser-known areas of Kyushu in a single ride. It also fits well into a custom itinerary focused on regional connections and mixed transport.
From Nagasaki to the Base of Unzen
The first 40 km out of Nagasaki follows major roads with heavy traffic. It's a section for making distance rather than lingering. A quieter alternative via a narrow coastal road offers a scenic escape - though the strong winds can make it more effort than it's worth for some.
Climbing into Unzen
From the coastal plain, the road climbs steadily for about 750 meters into the volcanic highlands of Mt. Unzen. The gradient is manageable, but the length and exposure can take a toll, especially if preceded by wind.
There are small breaks along the way, including a retro toy museum and the Unzen Onsen Shrine, both offering a bit of local character. The climb ends in Unzen Onsen, a quiet town with steam rising from the streets and an atmosphere that feels far from city life.
Descent to Shimabara & the Mudslide Museum
From Unzen, the descent is long and fast, winding down into the coastal town of Shimabara. A few kilometers before the ferry terminal is the Onokoba Mudslide Museum, located on the site of a 1990s volcanic disaster. Preserved homes still buried in mud offer a vivid, eerie snapshot of the region's power.
Ferry to Kumamoto & Final Ride
The ferry from Shimabara to Kumamoto Port takes about 30 minutes and runs regularly. From the port, it's a flat 15 km ride to the city center - a relaxed end to a physically demanding day.
Kumamoto makes a convenient overnight stop, especially for travelers planning to continue deeper into Kyushu or toward the Aso region the next day.
