Route Overview
The day begins in the Aso basin with a steady 300 m climb over 4 km through quiet forest roads. It's an early test, and walking sections are common here - not just for the effort, but for the chance to enjoy shaded mountain surroundings and a taste of fresh local spring water.
At the top, the landscape shifts to wide-open pastureland, where the road merges into the Yamanami Highway, one of the most famous scenic drives in Kyushu. Despite its name, the road is cyclist-friendly - wide, rolling, and with traffic that's manageable outside of peak hours.
High Plateau & Observatory Views
The climb continues steadily until Makinoto Pass, the day's high point at around 1,300 m elevation. Nearby, the Makino Pass Observatory offers sweeping views and a logical rest stop.
This route is ideal for pacing with "mini-goals" - several observatories line the ridgeline roads, making it easy to break up the elevation gain into smaller mental segments. One such target is this panoramic viewpoint.
A fast descent begins after the pass, with some opportunities missed if momentum is too strong - such as the Tadewara Wetlands, a worthwhile detour only accessible by backtracking uphill.
Final Stretch into Yufuin
The last 20–30 km is a mix of gentle rolling terrain and a long downhill into Yufuin, a stylish onsen town popular with younger domestic travelers. The final hour has slightly more traffic but remains safe, and the descent into town is a satisfying close to the day.
Yufuin itself is compact and walkable, with small art museums, boutique shops, and a mellow pace. Streets like Yunotobu Street are best enjoyed in the late afternoon, even if most shops are closing.
