Nakasendo Bike & Walk

Nakasendō: More Than Magome and Tsumago

"Im doing the Nakasendo"

A common theme in recent itineraries as people are trying to get further off the increasingly crowded Golden Route and maybe see a little countryside, maybe do a little walking

What most people mean by that is usually a day trip, maybe overnighter to one or two particular places - Magome and Tsumago.

These are the most popular, and by far the most crowded for a reason. It is both relativly easy to access on a day trip - or overnight if you can manage to book an inn which are notoriously book early.

These areas are also notable for their preserved old style arhictecture and beutiful scnes that you will find on instagram and make you want to go.

If you are looking for the instagram verison though, be sure to arrive early, or stay late, after the shops close and the crowds thin out.

But we are. not here to talk about that section of the Nakasendo, Plenty of tour companies offer day trips that will take your there.

The One LIfe Japan way to do the Nakasendo incldudes that smal lseciton, but so much more.

The nakasendo was originally made for walking, but walking the entire route can take two weeks, even then many packages include a lot of train to suttle you past the spots that are not so well known.

We have developed a hybrid method where we help you cover it all, or most of it - as mcuh as you can in the time you have - while taking you away from those crowds and seeing more.

Of course bike can get you through the wentire Nakasendo much quicker, but some of it really does deserve to be walked, and the actual old trail is not passible in parts by bike.

We proose a hybrid appraoch. You will ride, and walk - starting from Kyoto, or whereever you decide. The van will transport your luggage so you travle with only a light day pack, and bike the longer roads, getting off t owalk the wakabel. The van will take your bike to the nxt bike portion.

Evne if you decide to take a train for some of it, the bikes and luggage will meet you at the trains taiton where you get off, allowing you to spend more time than you had planned at any given spot, or exchange bad weather for a relazing afternoon in doors, or at an onesn.
